Media

Correct media selection is critical to the surface finishing process as the media exerts the physical rubbing on the components.  Type, grade, shape and size are all key factors to be considered if efficient processing and the desired surface finish are to be obtained.  In most instances, media selection is a compromise between these and other economic factors such as media attrition levels and process times.media

Type  Incorrect media type selection can have disastrous effects including part damage, extended process times, and burr rolling.  Generally, the correct media type is determined by the type of material being processed and the desired surface finish.  B.V. Products have a wide range of media types including pressed and extruded ceramics, preformed plastics, steel, organic, and sintered aluminium oxide nuggets.

Grade  Media grade determines both cutting rates and and the final surface finish of the parts.  B.V. Products grades of media range from fast-cutting, coarse-finishing to ultra-fine finishing and burnishing.

Shape  The shape of the media is critical if it is to access all regions of the part requiring surface finishing.  B.V. Products have an enormous selection of shapes for penetrating part intricacies such as slots and corners, recesses, holes, and crevices.  Media shape selection is equally important in terms of preventing media lodgement in more complex shaped parts and preventing damage to delicate components caused by sharp corners.

Size  Media size has several implications.  Larger sized media results in shorter process times but coarser finishes.  It can also result in part damage (breakage,  surface impingement) and burr rolling on softer, more delicate components.  Correct media size selection is also critical for ensuring complete and easy separation of parts and media, as well as eliminating media lodgement in parts.
